Partnering with Mr. Deck
If you are a licensed contractor working in
California,
how would you take to the idea of partnering with Mr. Deck on your next
deck or arbor project?
Here are my terms: any deck must be built from my solid-plastic PrimoPlank and
any arbor
must be designed by me.
I
will work with you in developing showpiece designs for your decks and arbor
projects. You will be able to incorporate my copyrighted designs into your
own projects to add the showpiece quality look.
You will be allowed to do as much of the prefabrication work as you can
competently handle yourself. Alternatively, I can provide you designer
elements that would require an off-site facility like mine for you to
produce. You can't do my kind of arbors working only from a pick-up truck.
I
will work right alongside you on major elements of the project. You do as
much as you are competent in doing.
Of course, my participation is not free:
1.
First,
your customer must commit to paying for my designs independently. The cost
isn't much for the design. There is however an additional expense in providing
the detailed structural plans that may be required for permitting and building the
furnished design.
2.
Secondly, you have to work under me as a subcontractor, eventhough you may
receive the majority of the revenue.
3. Thirdly you have to
pay a nominal fee for my instructing you. Look at it as the most
cost-effective way of paying for your education -- you can always learn
the hard way as I have.
Once you see how these decks and arbors are built, you will acquire
construction know-how that would otherwise take you decades to learn on
your own. Take heed: I don’t ever intend to spill all my hard-earned knowledge into a
book that just any schmuck can leaf through while browsing freely at Home Depot –
this is trade-secret stuff – and worth keeping closely-held by those
master tradesmen willing to invest in it themselves.
Once you start partnering with me, a number of things will start happening
for you:
·
You will
be referred by me to purchasers of PrimoPlank looking for an installer.
·
You will
start building decks with features no other deck builder in your area can
provide.
·
You will
begin getting a local reputation for decks and arbors that years later
look like they were just built.
·
You will
enter the upper realm of high-end projects and start working for people
who appreciate what you can do for them. You'll get beyond kissing ass for
the money.
You will be introduced to my suppliers who will provide you contractor
rates for the various grades of PrimoPlank. You will purchase your
materials directly from the manufacturers so you will get the best deal.
And you will have Mr. Deck to back you up as your representative on any
problem that might arise with my suppliers -- all of them have come to
heed my bundling specifications if they want my business.
I
have designed many original deck elements over 20 years that are still on
paper and have never yet been built. I have a number of patent
applications pending for some new deck accessories not yet announced. And
I am the copyright holder of many original classic arbor designs – that
by itself permits me to
design derivative works of my original structures and precludes others from doing so,
including you.
Today I'm 67 years young and can still set the pace on my projects. I have a backlog of ideas that I want to see
turned into actual constructs before they pass into the realm of oblivion
along with me -- I don't have lots of productive years left to wait around
until just the right opportunity is offered directly to me. Working with
others I believe will bring these opportunities around more swiftly.
This is not a franchise offering; you will remain independent and continue
operating the way you are now. I just think that collectively we master
tradesmen can
do much better by co-operating with each other rather than butting our macho heads
together.
