DESIGNER BRIDGES

This is a bridge that appears as arched but yet is flat ! It is located in The Villages community in south-eastern San Jose.

Because this is a retirement community, a flat bridge was a necessity for accommodating those with limited ambulatory ability. It just goes to show that an arched bridge need not be actually arched.

Above is an arched cedar bridge. Note the hefty butcher-block hand-rail. It was all designed to appear architecturally Japanese. It is located at Furuishis Nursery in Los Altos, a pristine, multi-generational Japanese family-owned garden business.

Another all-cedar bridge of the Japanese style shown above.

Above is a covered arched bridge. The style was specifically intended to be neo-Spanish. Note the canopy's strongly curved knee-bracing on the outer sides of the posts.

The supporting arches are laminated solid PrimoPlank. So is the decking, the decorative arched double top-rail and  railing cap. Those large rings in the valance between arbor-posts are also solid plastic, along with their arched upper and lower support rails. The rest is stained cedar.

Observe that this is probably one of only a few covered bridges in North America that is arched. Then note that the overhanging canopy is arched from side to side, opposite to the arch of the bridge, making it unique on the continent. I challenge anyone to show me one similar built before June 20th 2005.
