The
Cloistered Corner
Here is a porch arbor that is reminiscent of the Spanish mission in
Santa Barbara yet its home is in Gilroy. It has many columns in colonnade procession around the
perimeter.
The columns are bridged by arches with a neo-Spanish contour. The
columns and arches are continued along the blank back wall and are set
out of phase with the exterior colonnades to emphasize their existence
in the interior.
The front corner mimics yet another neo-Spanish construct
found on a two-story Santa Barbara condominium shown below. |

The
canopy is pyramidal, constructed of hefty 2 x 4's and set flush inside the
beam structure. The exterior beams have been trimmed with a hefty crown
molding, thereby giving the outer facade a regal flair.
At different times during a sunny day, the light is reflected
differently through the rafters, sometimes penetrating, most times
highlighting the interior slopes of the open canopy, always casting a
broad shadow somewhere, but always over the window and sliding glass door.

For evening lighting, a
cut-glass candelabra lantern has been hung from the canopy's apex and
positioned below the canopy's peripheral plane. Not only does this
touch add monastic charm to the interior setting, but highlights the
canopy and roof as seen from the exterior. The arbor takes a terribly
bland corner and converts it into one classy cloister. |
