The Caryotakis Project

This deck is a tribute to the California
lifestyle: outdoors should be just as comfortable as indoors. All along a
large section of the rear second story of the house is floor-to-ceiling
glass. The deck, always visible from indoors, becomes just an extension of
the interior living space.
The deck features a lean-out railing with built-in seating. On some
special occasions the seating becomes completely occupied, but on most
occasions it offers visitors and owner alike a convenient setting for
conversation and relaxation, anywhere along its entire length. There is
enough room on the deck for tables and chairs as well.

There is an unusual element to this structure by the way the planks
were laid relative to the understructure. Tie-in to the house framing
dictated 16" spacing of the joists; decking is usually at 24" spacing.
This tighter spacing allowed the plank to be run at 60 degrees to the
house as opposed to the customary 45 degrees for diagonal planking. In
this 16' wide deck, that scheme allowed 20' plank to reach from the house
to the railing, resulting in a 60' long seamless deck.
The zigging and zagging of the lean-out
railing and seating around the trees in the foreground is a testament to
the craftsmanship of the builder.
This deck was featured on the front
cover of Today's Homeowner Magazine, April, 1998, and was the leading photo of the article on deck
finishing.(p.37.)
