This deck was built on a canal in Foster City,
California. Because the deck was within 24" of the ground, the rules
for railings in the building code did not apply. So this 1⅝-inch
diameter Dacron mariners' rope was used for the railing instead.
The ropes were wrapped around a routed slot in each
post rather than running them through a drilled hole; this gives the
entire deck the desired nautical look.
Each post is an 8-inch diameter turned Douglas Fir
core treated with a water-based preservative. Each post contains a
recessed low-voltage truck running-lamp facing the deck. Of course
they were modified to handle the damp environment of the salt-water
marina.
This deck was constructed from interlocking
butcher-block redwood planking (no longer available) which was then
stained a blue-gray in keeping with the marina color-scheme.
Today, this same look can be obtained from our
blue-gray standard grade solid-plastic 2x6
PrimoPlank.
