PYRAMIDAL LACE
This arbor
project was designed and built for a townhouse backyard in Sunnyvale,
California. It features four-post columns, baluster valences
and a 4-directional wooden 2x4 rafter canopy with an eves overhang.

If this arbor were to be produced again, the
canopy and baluster valences would be fabricated from ultra-white
solid plastic. The beams would be capped with 1/8-inch PVC.
An all-plastic canopy would allow this arbor to
support flowering vines such as Bougainvillea or Jasmine without any
degradation whatsoever to the structure's integrity or its appearance.
The full potential of this arbor's design has
yet to be demonstrated and Mr. Deck is looking for a picturesque
setting in which to build a free-standing version.
The distance between posts in the photo is 12
feet. The canopy size shown here is 12'x16'.
As a free-standing structure this arbor can be
scaled up: The distance between posts could be extended to 14 feet.
The canopy dimension could be expanded to20'x20'.
That would make a pretty good size arbor on
just 4 posts |
