The Hamada Project
Copyright Architectural Structure
VA 953-435 USA 3/18/99

This project consisted of two similarly styled
arbors and a deck. The deck is situated independently beneath the larger of
the two arbors.
The major arbor is placed in an area where the
back rear corner rests directly on the roof -- no other way around this
intrusion. But the major part of the weight is handled by the rear left
column. The left rear column is not aligned with the rear right column but
is at the same distance from the rear wall directly behind it as the right
one is from its wall.

The columns are precast continuous, hollow
marble-dust sleeves with 1-inch thick walls. They are set over 6x6 pressure-treated
posts that are anchored to a 36-inch deep,16-inch diameter concrete
foundation with a heavy-duty post-base bracket. All this is hidden by support bases that
are nothing but stucco-ed Styrofoam blocks! And these were merely slipped
over the posts before the block cap and column were likewise put in place.
The arbor framework is painted Douglas fir but
the lath canopy is hollow PVC plastic 4x4 tubing with capped ends.
This arbor sits in a backyard that
is open to the fairway at Ridgemark Country Club in Hollister CA. While we were putting the
finishing touches to it, a cavalcade of golfers in golf carts stopped, got
out, walked over to the embankment along the boundary and simultaneously gave the Mr. Deck
construction crew a standing ovation! Now that was a class act befitting a
class effort.
