Here is a broad 3D patio-cover in the shape of a semi-circular markee fit for the Marquis de California. It is designed to block almost all of the direct sunlight with only a 5% penetration at high noon and a total eclipse of the setting sun. The upper canopy consists of diagonal 2x8's slanted on edge 45* toward the wall. This blocks all direct sunlight but allows in plenty of indirect light from reflection off the top side of one 2x8 to the underside of the preceding one, all throughout the top plane. The lower rim is a whopping 25 ft. in diameter. The upper canopy is a vast 14 ft across and sits 3 feet above the lower rim. The rim-beam is pierced by balanced support beams to keep the canopy's height right at 12 ft, the customary height limit on residential auxiliary structures. The lath between the upper and lower U-beams consists of PVC 2x4's in-between 5x8 rafters sloped at 20º. The upper U-beam is a continuous 4x10 supporting crossing 4x8's. The lower U-beam is a continuous 5x12 set upon intersecting 6x12 stub-beams for support. The entire structure is set upon four concrete-filled reinforced 1-foot diameter 8-foot Roman columns. Additional support is obtained by attaching the U-beams to the house wall. The lower U-beam is attached by brackets hung on the window headers at each side of the entry way. The upper U-beam is attached to hidden blocking that must be surgically inserted into the 2nd-story stud wall. This latter attachment has sufficient strength because of its close proximity to the built-out wall of the 2nd-story alcove above the entrance doorway. Dimensions: Width - 25' Space between center columns - 13' Marquee overhang - 6 1/2' Specifications: Columns (4) hollow concrete sleeves over 6x6 pressure-treated fir set 48 inches below hard patio surface in reinforced concrete. Timbers: Select-structural #1 exposed-grade Douglas Fir resawn 4 sides and painted 3 times.
