The Platner Project

Here is a spa deck with an unimpeded view. It
features a split-level floor separated by one step (2 risers) running
diagonally, corner to corner, interrupted by the spa with diagonal
corners.

The lower level is at pool deck level and one step off the ground.
The upper level sports a continuous skip-board seat along its exposed
sides.

Note too that the deck corners
sport frosted tube lights designed just for this setting. The deck is
situated on a crest of a semi-arid knoll in Portola Valley overlooking the plusher
wooded valley below. At night, all that disappears with the low level
corner lighting making a red carpet of wood for an internally blue-lit
spa.
Note that the diagonal corner of the continuous seat
has no supports. That's made possible by the inter-lacing of the 2x4's at
the corners.

The deck was featured in Today's Homeowner
magazine July/August 1998, page 36, entitled "Picture Perfect".
