Designer Spiral Staircase #2 – Open Center This spiraling staircase is prefabricated from solid-plastic, permanently colored PrimoPlank. It's all maintenance free. It was attached to a pressure-treated pine deck. The balusters in the deck railings were painted white to match the staircase railings.
Which style stair would you rather
have: the spiral stair above or
I think the choice is obvious.
You may think that because this attached structure was
fabricated from plastic that it may not be all that rigid. Well let me
correct that misapprehension: When we prefabricated and assembled this very
staircase in the shop, it was only fastened to 1/2-inch plywood sheets
laying on a concrete floor by essentially thin metal 2x
The outside diameter of the entire structure is 9-1/2 feet across. A
standard spiral staircase (one sold elsewhere) --photo below -- is wrapped around a pole at
the center so it's much narrower: only 5½ foot across. In the
designer
staircase, shown to the left here, the diameter is larger because there is an interior 3½-foot
diameter hollow column around which the stair wends. It is this construct
that keeps the staircase from spiraling too sharply and makes it much safer
for outdoor use and use by children.
I wouldn't trust this wooden staircase to last outdoors for even 3 years ! Standard spiral staircase Our solid-plastic staircase will outlast your wooden deck10-times over.
On our designer staircase, each tread is independently supported on both sides. Also, separate handrails run down both sides, just inside the spiral top-rails. They are composed of continuous solid-plastic 1½-inch diameter round mounted on non-corrosive nickel-plated brackets, the color of pewter.
The accessible width of the inside
step of any standard staircase
(shown below ) for all practical purposes vanishes at the center. The
inside tread size of our designer
staircase is
This larger depth of the inside tread, plus the handrail on the inside, makes the designer staircase a much safer structure. Most people and all kids descend near the center for expediency -- one misstep on the standard spiral stair and they're going down right into the railing, feet first, 4 risers below where they slipped. The width of each step of our designer stair is a full 3 feet. Most important though is that the center depth of each tread is 12 inches, the same as any normal stair. This makes for both ascending and descending the staircase at a very customary gait. Also note that our designer staircase has solid risers -- another safety feature. The basic stair height is 9ft- 4in: there are 15 steps and 16 risers, each 7" high, giving the basic minimum height of 9'- 4". All step risers are solid. The total height can be increased in 7-inch increments by adding steps, up to 11ft - 1in maximum. All added steps are straight steps added to the bottom. The last full-view photo shows one added straight step. The outside support posts are vertical stiff
4x4's, one at the threshold of each step. The intermediate balusters are
2x2's. The
interior support posts are 2x4's and function as balusters. They go all the way to
the ground and are integrated by two 1x2 solid-plastic collars.
The posts at the top are included in the basic package. The staircase comes to you totally disassembled -- both layout and assembly instructions are provided along with photos. All assembly hardware is provided. Only non-corrosive Dacronite flared-head screws are used. The post base mounting brackets onto which the staircase will be placed are also included. The only item that you will have to provide are the in-ground anchor-bolts. The kit assumes a perfectly level ground platform. You have a choice of any of the 10 colors of above-grade PrimoPlank. You can specify a mix of colors for striking effects. The example shown above is weathered wood accented with a white outside railing and white step-risers. The inside handrail is white and the outside handrail is weathered wood for contrast on both sides. You must first communicate your physical situation to us to order this product. You will need a powered screwdriver to assemble and erect this kit. You will need a plumb-bob for layout and a hammer-drill for inserting the anchor-bolts into the concrete or masonry patio. You will also need an assortment of clamps for installing the spiral handrails. Prices
Prices stated are FOB San Martin, CA -- freight costs are added. Order must be prepaid in full before shipment. Shipping costs must be paid once they are known after loading.
