Inexpensive designer arbors

Here's the deal

I need to get each style arbor built in a nice setting so I can photograph it to demonstrate its feasibility by displaying it on this website. Don't be concerned -- every arbor on this website was built correctly the first time around.

I'll cost out the arbor for your situation and particular size. If you accept the price, it will be built for you by me personally and erected on your property for cost of materials plus 60%. That's just to cover overhead and travel. Your property must be within our local area of operation.

Just to keep any request on the level, you will be required to pay the pre-established fee for my on-site visit and a $50 estimation fee. Neither will be refundable nor used for credit against the quoted price. That's the deal: take it or leave it as presented.

Click here for some showpiece designer arbors that are relatively inexpensive compared to those completed arbors pictured in photos on this website.

Spiral Staircase

I am looking for a picturesque site to photograph our solid-plastic pole-mounted spiral staircase. At present we have only installed these in open stairwells -- not a good place to capture the big picture on camera. I want an installation where it will be an extension of a second-story deck that either exists or we build it under a separate contract.

The dimensions are 63 inches in diameter and 16 steps to the top platform, about 9½ feet high.

The mounting platform is a triangle 36 inches on each side, with one side being attached to the side of the second-story deck. Another side receives a railing and the third side forms the top-most step.

The top rail is more robust for an exposed installation than what we show for a stairwell installation. There is also a separate 1½ -inch round offset handrail, an absolute necessity for a an exposed stair which is going to be subject to rain, dew and wet tree droppings.

Here's the deal

The listed price for this pole-mounted staircase is $5,900 excluding freight and installation charges. You pay Mr. Deck only $4600 for the stair, delivery and installation. That's a savings of between $2500 and $3200, depending upon your location in California.

If there is any permit involved, you get and pay for the permit. Any tie-in work to the existing deck, like removing railings and facia, or repair-work, you pay extra.

The staircase's hidden pole is mounted on a 3-inch stub-pipe, either vertically embedded into new concrete or bolted onto an existing concrete base. Any cutting into concrete or pouring new concrete is not included; you will need to have it done ahead of time at your own expense. We'll drill the concrete for the bolts ourselves, as part of the installation.

Here are some of the benefits of an all-plastic staircase:

  • There is no maintenance, except for an occasional hosing-off.

  • The stair will keep its colors indefinitely.

  • The stair is quiet; you don't get the noise and vibration as with metal and wood staircases.

  • You won't get wear patterns on the treads.

  • Polyethylene plastic actually increases its traction in wet conditions, so slippage is mitigated.

  • If you should fall on the stairs, you won't get cut or scraped as you would with metal, just bruised, because the plastic doesn't have any sharp edges and is slightly resilient.

  • Also, our wrap-around, continuous plastic facia at the tread-level prevents your foot from slipping between the balusters in a fall, where you can really get injured.

  • Any superficial scrapes on the steps can be easily eliminated with a simple paint-scraper.

  • Nothing adheres to polyethylene plastic for long -- its non-paintable, non-stainable, does not get mildew or rust.

  • Any rust mark that might derive from leaving something metallic on it for long can be removed easily with Jasco Metal-Etch® which you can get at any ACE Hardware store -- it won't lighten the plastic.

  • Since only stainless steel or special alloy fasteners are used on any exposed surfaces, you won't get any rust marks over the years from the weathering of the structure itself.

  • Fasteners with a course thread which are threaded into solid-plastic are tuff to pull out, way harder than any nail -- course-threaded fasteners are what we use throughout.
