This arbor is a tribute to the outdoor
living enjoyed by most Californians. The structure was designed with the
primary purpose of functioning as an outdoor dining area. One side has two
side-by-side built-in fold-down tables that can be quickly erected to
provide the serving counter.
The
pyramidal canopy houses a hanging lamp for soft lighting over the centered
table in the early dusk. The entire structure is fabricated from all
clear-heart redwood. The lattice is softened by having all its individual
lath strips beveled on all four edges before being assembled into lattice
panels. The softness is carried over to the entire structure by treating it
with a bleaching oil which grays gracefully over a period of a few
months.

The interior contains lattice shadows everywhere, giving it a pleasant cozy
atmosphere. The lacy pattern is grounded by the massive intersecting beams
in the ceiling. These in turn are elevated by the lacy diagonal corners.
Eight supporting posts anchor this lofty structure to terra firma.
This arbor was pictured in: Redwood News, Summer
1997 (p.4), The California Redwood Association news publication.
