This 40 ft long arbor is a composite of two earlier projects:
Gillette and
Wingartner. The structure is an excellent example of how the
distinctive features of two different architectural designs can be merged to
form a new one.
There are some added features as well. For one, the posts have fluted
trim-panels added on all four sides between the collar and base, giving each
post a more robust appearance. For two, the central arch has a paddlewheel
valence -- so the entire exterior is draped with a balustered valence.
The canopy lath is 3X3 hollow vinyl PVC square tubing with 2½" spacing
in the wings and 4X4 PVC tubing with 3" spacing in the billow. The 3X3's
extend 28" while the 4X4's extend 48" -- the maximum for 3/16-wall tubing
for each respective size.

There are 5 hanging 3-candelabra lanterns each providing 180 watts of
illumination -- exactly right for their spacing.
The pattern of the shading and the aesthetics of the
shadows are quite evident in the photos. It is quite pleasant being immersed
in this complex of shade and shadow.
The structure serves well as a visual break in the bland 2-story wall
with a southwest exposure.
