Winged Brim & Billow

Here is a patio-cover that is simple in its linear design but complex enough to capture your attention. The canopy is billowed in the center and extended forward to terminate in a brim, well out beyond the supporting arch. The width of the canopy is extended by symmetric wings on each side of the billow.

Character is integrated into the configuration by the solid kneebraces from post to beam whose carving complements the carved beams' ends.

The structure is attached to the stucco wall behind it with hidden pressure-treated spacer-blocks screwed into the wall's interior studs. As a consequence the entire rear section has a relief appearance as if the structure were actually detached.

All bolts and brackets are hidden and it is this feature that gives this structure its sleek aerial delineation.

I was asked recently (April'05), just why the wings were set back from the billow. Well that's a design feature that gives this arbor its distinctive style. Click here to see how an infringing contractor built this design where the wings and billow are all equally extended. Now which design is more attractive?
